Being a functional or technical leader on an implementation requires both working with subject matter experts within your organization but also other consultants on the project to ensure that business requirements are met and the business processes flow nicely from department to department.  When filling these roles, it is important to understand not only the overall needs of the business and the requirements, but to understand what the end users need to do to complete their duties.
